Study with us

With a number of staff working on the British past, a vibrant postgraduate community, and a series of on-going events, Modern British Studies at Birmingham offers a dynamic and supportive environment for postgraduate research. Postgraduates here contribute a great deal towards our research culture, our historical practice, and our more outward facing initiatives.

We offer an MA in Modern British Studies. The current convenor of the MA is Dr Zoë Thomas. You can find details about the course and how to apply on our University web pages. This programme provides new ways of thinking about Britain’s past and highlights new approaches that might be taken to studying Modern Britain which give our students fresh perspectives on the past and the present.

You can find out more by reading former director Dr Chris Moores’s reflections on teaching this course in the past.

Modules from this course will also be available through the University of Birmingham’s Distance Learning programmes. The University website has more details about these and how they run.

Members of Modern British Studies offer PhD supervision on a wide range of topics. Our staff profiles have more information about our individual research interests. You can also find out about postgraduate research at the University of Birmingham, and more information is available on how to apply for our programmes and current funding opportunities.

We also offer opportunities for Visiting Scholars wishing to join us.
